Application Process

To apply to the PhD program in Economics, all applicants must complete the application electronically and submit it online. If you are unable to supply references via the online portal, or if you would like to submit them in writing, please download the recommendation form (PDF).

Before applying online, please download and print the instructions and follow along as you complete the online application. It will greatly reduce delays in processing if the application is completed correctly. It will also ensure that the fields in our database are accurately populated.

Apply Online

Some materials can be sent by regular mail, principally transcripts and letters of recommendation (recommendation form). In addition to the application, please remember to submit all the required supporting documents to the department in a timely fashion, keeping in mind that our application deadline is January 15.

Here is a brief list of items that you will need for your application:

  • Check and payment voucher if you choose to pay your application fee by check
  • Official GRE scores from the Educational Testing Service
  • Official TOEFL scores from the Educational Testing Service if you are an international student whose native language is not English
  • Official transcripts from all colleges/institutions you have attended
  • Three letters of recommendation from evaluators who can address your potential for success in a graduate program in economics
  • The career statement that addresses your intellectual and professional goals, in 500 words or less.
