Professor Allison Shertzer has featured article in the Journal of Economic History

The Editors of The Journal of Economic History are pleased to announce Shari Eli, Laura Salisbury and Allison Shertzer's article, "Ideology and Migration after the American Civil War".

This paper investigates the relationship between ideology and the migration choices of Civil War veterans from the border state of Kentucky, which sent soldiers to both the Union and Confederate Armies. We find strong evidence of sorting along ideological dimensions, with Union Army veterans more likely to migrate away from Confederate-dominated home towns for counties and states more aligned with the Union while the reverse was true for Confederate veterans.
