Troesken Fellowship

Troesken Fellowship

Graduate students interested in incorporating at least one economic history chapter into their dissertation are invited to apply for the annual Troesken Fellowship, established in honor of the late Professor Werner Troesken. Werner made important contributions to economic history that provided new insights into the political economy of public health, infrastructure, and regulation in the 19th and early 20th centuries. His work illuminated how institutions and policies - ranging from water systems to racial discrimination and regulation of monopolies - shaped economic and health outcomes over time. You can learn more about his life and contributions here.

The fellowship funds one semester (Fall or Spring) of graduate study, enabling the recipient to focus fully on their proposed project.

To apply, PhD students in the Department of Economics can submit a two-page project proposal to walshr@pitt.edu, a.ferrara@pitt.edu, and omer.ali@pitt.edu by April 15th, detailing the research question, methodology, and significance of their project. Proposals may focus on the economic history of any geographic region or period prior to 1970. Students earlier in their Ph.D., those proposing visiting stays, and those proposing topics in line with Werner's and/or current faculty members' interests will be prioritized. Proposals will be reviewed by Professors Randy Walsh, Omer Ali, and Andy Ferrara and the winner announced by the end of May.
