Social Sciences Doctoral Dissertation (SSDD) Fellowships are awarded to students of exceptional ability and promise who are enrolled in programs leading to the PhD in the social sciences.

The Chancellor’s Graduate Fellowship in Chinese Studies Award is administered by the Asian Studies Center and supports PhD students in any field of Chinese studies. Fellowships include a stipend and tuition scholarship for the academic year for which the award is made.

The Alfredo D. and Luz Maria P. Gutierrez Fellowship is awarded to an outstanding full-time graduate student whose research is focused on Latin America. Recipients are selected on the basis of academic achievement and promise of research contributions.

Graduate students interested in incorporating at least one economic history chapter into their dissertation are invited to apply for the annual Troesken Fellowship, established in honor of the late Professor Werner Troesken. Werner made important contributions to economic history that provided new insights into the political economy of public health, infrastructure, and regulation in the 19th and early 20th centuries. His work illuminated how institutions and policies - ranging from water systems to racial discrimination and regulation of monopolies - shaped economic and health outcomes over time. You can learn more about his life and contributions here.

The Best Second-Year Paper Award is given to the student whose second-year paper has the highest publication potential. The name of the winner is engraved on a plaque by the department’s main entrance. Awards are publicly announced at the department's Welcome Picnic at the beginning of each academic year late in August.

The Graduate Student Teaching Award is given to a graduate student who served as primary instructor of a summer course, in recognition for teaching excellence. The name of the winner is engraved on a plaque by the department’s main entrance. Awards are publicly announced at the department's Welcome Picnic at the beginning of each academic year late in August.

Each year the department offers an Arts & Sciences Summer Fellowships to our graduate students in support of their research.

Graduate students are the primary instructors for most of the department's summer-term undergraduate courses. Summer teaching appointments are based on the student’s expertise in the field and whether the student prefers to teach in the first or second six-week summer session.

Graduate students are encouraged to participate in external conferences by presenting their research. Small travel grants are available to support travel expenses.
