Arts & Sciences Summer Fellowships

Each year the Department of Economics offers summer fellowships to our graduate students in support of their research activities.

Eligibility

To be eligible for a Summer Fellowship, students should be in good academic standing, should have passed both Preliminary examinations, and have a GPA of 3.0 or higher; they should be making progress toward completion of a PhD, and should not yet have been admitted to doctoral candidacy.

Application Process

The Economics Graduate Office notifies all graduate students regarding the availability and application procedure at the beginning of March.

Applicants must submit a completed cover sheet and a 2-3 page proposal outlining precisely how the fellowship will be used. Possible uses of the fellowship include, but are not limited to: writing a new research paper, presenting work at conferences, traveling to gather data, and conducting a laboratory experiment. Students who are in their second year in the program, and who will be preparing for the PhD Comprehensive milestone (second-year research paper) are encouraged to apply for this fellowship.

In addition to a 2-3 page proposal, the applicant must also secure the approval of a faculty member who agrees to supervise the project described in the research proposal. The signature of the supervising faculty member is required.

The deadline to submit proposals to the Graduate Administrator is the third week in March. The proposals are then evaluated by the Economics Graduate Committee, which ultimately decides which proposals to fund.

Failure to receive a fellowship in one year does not preclude application for this award in subsequent years.
